• Case Study: Robina Hospital Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD)

    • THE CASE

Due to the changes in the Australian Standard, Robina Hospital’s CSSD Water Treatment Plant (WTP) required improvements to ensure they were compliant with the new Australian Standard AS/NZS4187:2014. The water treatment system was outdated (over 20 years old) with numerous improvements required, including replacement of a plastic tank and plastic piping.

Robina Hospital required a robust, reliable and maintainable solution to bring the CSSD up to current Standards. They also required capacity and redundancy to meet the demands of a busy Gold Coast Hospital. It was a challenging job with limited access to the upper level plant room being a key restriction. The job of replacing the system required the expertise of our Aquacure water treatment specialists to find a solution that suited the hospital’s needs.

      THE APPROACH

Our approach was to offer a custom-built WTP with Reverse Osmosis and automated Hot Water Disinfection as the core technologies. This new plant included new pipe-work, a modular design, skid mounting, redundancy (N+1), hot water disinfection system, automation and monitoring.

This new system offered a practical solution within the hospital’s pre-existing and limited space. Access was difficult, but we were able to make it work with our custom configuration. The team outlined a clear set of goals with the client to ensure the health care facility would meet the required Standards and that they would be compliant and mitigate risk. The new system would ensure the highest possible levels of patient safety in accordance with the new Standard with regards to the feed water supply to Cleaning Process, Final Rinse and Clean Steam Generation use in the CSSD.

      THE RESULTS

Aquacure provided exceptional results. Robina Hospital received a WTP that was site-specific due to our company’s ability to custom-build. The water quality from the new plant is outstanding, meeting or exceeding all requirements of the new AS/NZS 4187: 2014 Standard, including challenging chloride, silica, TVC and endotoxin requirements per Tables 7.2 and 7.4 of the Standard.

Aquacure provides their clients with up-to-date custom systems to suit each specific site, and a complete solution including investigation, designing, building, installation and service to prevent and eliminate Endotoxin and other microbial risks in the water for your CSSD.

Our goal is to help mitigate against all relevant risks, ultimately ensuring your CSSD is compliant and your patients are protected from any relevant waterborne nosocomial infections in the CSSD process feed water supply. In addition to meeting new compliance requirements, having high purity water in the CSSD can add the practical benefit of extending the life of the instruments. With good-quality water, surgical instruments can last longer with less corrosion and staining issues.
